When the Tirot Sing Memorial College was established in 1981 under the name of one of the State’s Freedom Fighter “U TIROT SING” the Department of Political Science also came into being at the Pre-University level. It continued till the college was granted Ad-hoc status from the Government of Meghalaya in 1987. Later in 1992 the college was granted permission to open a Degree Course and got affiliation from the North Eastern Hill University. Therefore in 1995 the Honours Course pass was added in 1995,and since then the department has been catering to the needs of hundreds of students taking Political Science in pass course and Honours courses,. The Department presently is headed by Assistant Professor Kolmon Najiar (HOD) with two others faculty members Smt.Balisha Syiem and Shri.Shailestar Nongrang as the full fledged lecturers in the department. One more lecturer is set to join the Department this year 2023 after the Education Department Government of Meghalaya has sanctioned the post for the same. From the very humble beginning the department has been able to make good progress in catering to the academic requirements of the students community of Mairang and its adjoining areas. The intake of students in the honours or major courses has been increasing over the years. Many students who have taken honours in the subject has even gone or completing their post graduates or master degree from NEHU as well as from other universities in India. Academically, the performance of the students in the degree and honours course is satisfactory. However taking the quality of the students and their socio-economic background and since the college is rural based, it can be said that the performance of the Department has been very satisfactory even though not up to what the department expected. All this is due to the untiring efforts and total commitment of the faculty members who has been showing extra care and concern for the students’ community So that they are able to make it to their expectations and become meaningful citizen of the state. All the faculty members of the Department are sincere, hard working and dedicated. There is complete trust and faith among them. There is a close-Co-Operation and Co-Ordination in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities. Any difficulties or problems that arises within the Department is solved through discussion and consensus. There is a teamwork and sharing of responsibilities and duties. All these qualities have helped the department of Political Science to grow from strength to strength and more especially in its future Endeavour Besides, the above the Department has also undertake other activities like study tour with the department of History in the year 2022 in collaboration with the department of History and the department of Political Science of Sankerdev College Shillong to Nongkhlaw where “History and Polity lives to celebrate world heritage day” 18th April 2022. Apart from this, the department also attended the one day seminar at Sankerdev College on the 4th November 2022. The team was led by the Head of Department Assistant Professor Shri.Kolmon Najiar along with 10 students of the sixth semester students of the Department. The Department also has a plan to undertake other social activities both within the college as well as outside and to make the students aware of the duties and responsibilities as a citizens of the states and the country as a whole. This will enable them to achieve their goals in life through professional future and come out with flying colours.
